How the calculator works
The math is simple: jar volume ร packing factor รท average piece size. Smaller, more uniform candies (like M&Ms and Skittles) pack more efficiently and fit more pieces per liter. Larger or irregular shapes (gumballs, gummy bears) leave more air gaps between pieces.
For each candy we use an empirical "pieces per liter" constant, then multiply by the jar's volume in liters. A standard quart Mason jar holds about 0.95 liters, a half-gallon holds 1.89, and a one-gallon jar holds 3.79.
This calculator works for standard mason jars (pint, quart, half-gallon and gallon) as well as any custom container โ just enter the volume in ounces or milliliters.
Winning a candy guessing contest
Don't try to count every piece. Instead:
- Count the pieces visible across the bottom of the jar.
- Count how many layers stack up the side.
- Multiply the two, then multiply by about 0.8 to account for packing gaps and uneven layers.
